RDP disconnect while VPN active

MUVPN-Clients do normally IPSEC-VPN to box and RDP to trusted stations. After a while the RDP-sessions disconnect, VPN is still alive but a reconnection of RDP is not possible still disconnecting/reconnecting VPN.
Any ways to log or check this behaviour? any ideas?

  • For the record, what firewall model do you have and what version of software is it running?

Which IPSec VPN client is this, Shrew or the WG NCP ?

  • M300 with WSM 12.5.7 and WG NCP-Clients

If the VPN session is still active, I'd check the event logs for the remote desktop service on both the server and client PC. There may be a log entry with information suggesting why this is happening.

Does the disconnectoin happen at any specific time (like 1 hr after connection, or during 30 minutes of idle time?)

  • First I thought about the default idle timeout of 30min, but sometimes it happens during working. The odd thing is the vpn is still active and only e reconnect helps.
Next time I try to find out more...

  • I would check if you have the same reconnect issue locally. If so, it is an rdp issue. Otherewise, it is a vpn/isp issue. I have seen late packets or packet loss cause rdp disconnects.
