BOVPN tunnels and Excel 2021 tunnel lag

We have a client with 3 remote locations all tied to the HQ with BOVPN tunnels.

They have a log book Excel sheet that everyone updates on occasion locate on the server at the HQ.

What I have found is Excel 2019 and earlier handle that fine. Excel 2021 gets file lock errors trying to open the file.

I moved a PC to a different branch office and the problem followed, I backed down the Office version to 2019 and there are no issues at any branch location.

I'm going to ask Microsoft as well, but does anyone know what 2021 might be doing differently vs 2019 and below on a BOVPN tunnel?

Thanks,
Ed

    Hi @Ed_Gruenwald

The tunnel latency shouldn't/won't have any impact on the Excel version using/leaving a lock file. I think your testing does a pretty good job proving this isn't the VPN itself causing this.

My hunch is that the hidden file Excel creates when a document is open isn't being removed. I'd suggest checking permissions and/or file access errors to see if another user trying to open the file is possibly removing the first user's ability to remove that lock file.
