BOVPN Replication Speeds

Good Afternoon,

We have three different sites with 370'S and 390's. We are using BOVPN's for replication of our servers. We just aren't getting the best replication speeds. Some are up to 100mbps and some are 20mbps. We do have 1gb links on all of the sites however one site has 100mbps.

Should we be able to replicate faster than this? We've checked almost every setting in the watchguard and I've read quite a bit but there is nothing conclusive out there.

    Hi @travis_tmb
    Have you checked what you can actually transfer between sites? The ISP's advertised download speeds are generally asymmetric (meaning the download is higher than the upload) and that it is their max speed. Downloading a single file from a website, will often not max out your ISP connection.

    Tools like iperf can help you determine connection speed from one point to another.

    Latency also plays a role for some protocols, so if latency is higher between sites, the useable amount of data the protocol will send gets lower. SMB is a very good example of how latency can affect a common protocol.

    Also, exactly what transfer type are you using?
    FTP as an example will go much faster than a SMB (Windows file sharing) transfer.

    You can use tools such as Ping Plotter to see a graph of the latency from 1 end to the other end of a BOVPN, which may help understand if latency is a big issue or not.
