Can I reset the admin password to the Watchguard XTM 330

Hello,
the LAN Administrator gone away and he didn't left any password(s).
Is there a way to reset only the admin password?
I already tried to use the default password but they don't run,
I also installed the watchguard system manager and I cannot connect to the device because the credentials. I also tried the "status" user name with "readwrite" password.
So, at this point I would reset the admin password. Is it possible? How can I do it?
Thanks in advance

Michele

  • You need to factory reset the firewall in order to change the access user IDs and/or passwords.

Prior to doing so, make sure that you have saved the current config.
After the factory reset, you can reload the saved config.

    Hello Bruce,
really many thanks for your reply.
I found the password of "status" user. It seems to be good to apply changes (I didn't tried to modificy anything yet). I didn't found the admin user. Is it normal?
Is there is a "cloud" access?
I meant: Can somebody access to it remotely even the status/admin password changed?
    Thanks again

  • With the Web UI or the CLI, using the status password, you can not make changes to the firewall config.

With WSM Policy Manager, you can change the in memory version of the firewall config and even save those changes to a disk file, but you can't save those changes back to the firewall - you need the admin password to do that.

  • Now that you have the status password, you can save the current config to a file using Policy manager. Also record the current firmware level and the feature key. Then you can factory reset it, restore the feature key, upgrade the firmware to whatever it was running, then restore the config file.

  • Thanks to all. I found the admin password too (after some login).
Now I'm trying to manage this firewall even if I don't have any experience with Watchfuard. It is really hard to understand how it works...

  • You can look at the Help, which is searchable.

  • I find it easier to understand when using the downloadable WSM package to use Policy Manager vs. using the web UI. Policy Manager shows all policies better and to me, it's much easier to see at a glance what each policy does. I rarely touch the web UI.

Yes, it does take a bit of getting used to WatchGuard, but I will never go back to Fortinet (not enough features, at least when I bailed over 10 years ago) or SonicWALL, which has a hideous interface.

  • I point my customers to this page -->> https://www.watchguard.com/wgrd-help/video-tutorials/overview

The "Getting Started with Firebox" filter on that page gets good feedback..

If you have a watchguard account, then you can access this training --> https://watchguard.force.com/customers/Courseware_Files?id=a2Z0H000000J0RXUA0 which is part of this set --> https://watchguard.force.com/customers/Courseware
