WIPS on a all WG Wifi network

Is there any added benefit in having a dedicated wips device or radio if you are only using wg access points? It seems that the features of wips are designed to add security features that are built into wg APs to non wg APs.

  • WIPS is also just as useful if you only have WG APs.

Thanks. It looks like WIPs is vital. I guess I just assumed the Total Security included wips. I was about to purchase a ap327x for an ap but now I think I have to have a wips capable device. The ap327x can’t be both an access point and wips device at the same time, right? I’m thinking of going with a ap225w because it has the third radio which can be used for wips. I’ll have to give up the outdoor project the outdoor ap327x was to be used for for now due to costs. Any thoughts appreciated

    Hi @user808

There is a background scanning option which does some scanning using the two radios the outdoor (327x) AP has.

    You can read more here:
    https://www.watchguard.com/help/docs/help-center/en-US/Content/en-US/Wi-Fi-Cloud/twe/about_wips.html

APs with the 3rd built in radio (AP225W, AP325, and AP420) can dedicate that 3rd radio to scanning, but 2 radio units can still scan.

Since the coverage area for a WIPS sensor is much larger, depending on the size of your outdoor area, it may be possible to cover it with the 3 radio APs that are inside close to windows. Speaking with your WatchGuard partner and seeing if it's possible to do a survey of that area may help get more information for you.
