USB Drive attached to Firebox does not show up as Backup media

I am having a problem using a USB thumb drive for backup media. On my old M270, it didn't ever recognize an inserted USB and I figured it was just defective hardware. Now on my new M290 and T-45 fireboxes I have the same problem, so figure I must have to enable the USB ports or there is something more than just FAT32 format that is required.

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

    Hi @Landy

The USB drive needs to work with generic mass storage device drivers. I've personally had the best luck with drives that are 8GB or less.

If the thumbdrive contains an additional partition/drive with software, or is encrypted via software, it likely will not work via the firebox.

  • Should it be formatted with a Master Boot Record (MBR) or GUID boot record?

I have tried small drives before without luck and format them in Windows as FAT32 using default settings. Only a single partition. I have tried 256MB, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB thumb drives and never had one appear as available media on the Backup and Restore page of the GUI or System Manager. I think MBR is the Windows default, so I will try forcing GUID on a small thumb drive and see if that makes any difference.

I have no idea what your statement "The USB drive needs to work with generic mass storage device drivers." means. What I have tried are simple USB 2 and USB 3 thumb drives from Sandisk, PNY and generic no name. All work fine on Windows, Mac OS and Linux computers right out of the package.
